The recent fertiliser fire and explosion at a farm in Essex has highlighted the importance of storing ammonium nitrate fertilisers safely. While ammonium nitrate is an effective and widely used fertiliser, under fire conditions it can rapidly decompose and, in certain circumstances, lead to a violent explosion.

Farmers and agricultural businesses should ensure that ammonium nitrate is stored in a clean, dry, well-ventilated building, protected from sources of heat and ignition. Fertiliser should be kept away from combustible materials such as straw, hay, timber, fuel, oils and chemicals, and stacks should be arranged to allow good access for inspection and firefighting.

Many farm operators are unaware that the Notification of Installations Handling Hazardous Substances Regulations 1990 (NIHHS) require premises storing certain quantities of dangerous substances, including ammonium nitrate over 25 tonnes, to notify both the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and the local Fire and Rescue Authority. This notification enables emergency responders to understand the hazards present and plan an effective response should an incident occur. On the back of the recent fire and explosion we are fully expecting a surge in visits to farms by the authorities.

Good housekeeping, appropriate storage conditions and compliance with notification requirements are simple but essential measures that can significantly reduce the risk to people, property and the environment.
