Sustainable Solutions support Action for Swifts!
We are always looking for organisations to support, and we have found plenty. From Derbyshire Wildlife Trust to Butterfly Conservation and Bumblebee Conservation Trust. Now our community has expanded to include an organisation that was founded to help a winged summer visitor, the Swift.
Swifts are the ultimate flyers!
They eat on the wing, drink on the wing, bathe on the wing, even sleeping and mating mid-flight. They barely ever land. Every year they clock up an epic migration between Africa and the UK. But their nest sites have become fewer in recent years, which has led to swift numbers crashing by 65% in the last 25 years. That’s more than half the population, gone, in a couple of decades.
Swift Houses
Founded in Cambridge by swift expert and engineer Dick Newell, along with builder Bill Murrells, it’s a small, bird-obsessed outfit with one big goal: give swifts somewhere safe to nest, and turn the population decline around. Run by Becky Ingham since 2022, the day-to-day work now focussing on getting large developers and builders to include a swift brick in every new house. Action for Swifts have been researching and designing special swift bricks that are all hand made by The Action for Swift team.
