Ecosystems Services is a brilliant approach to the “worth” and value of species in nature. But is there a standard unit and who says what species is worth more than others. Each species has a role to play in Nature and is a building block to an ecosystem.
I am and have been a member of Butterfly Conservation since 2011. I have raised money for the cause, have donated my time to help with butterfly surveys around Derbyshire and surroundings, and raise the level of awareness through education and just simply talking to people about all pollinators. I love this article in this season’s edition of Butterfly.
The pollinating service provided by bees, butterflies (other insects) are natural processes that keep conditions stable, more commonly known as Regulating Services. It’s simple, they transfer pollen from one flower to another which in turn gives us fruiting bodies. Butterflies also form a crucial part of food chains (birds eat vast quantities of caterpillars) and therefore ecosystems Provisioning and Supporting. And finally, what about that spiritual aspect – their beauty brings upon inspiration in minds to create poetry and artwork, therefore bringing Cultural value into the equation.
In summary, Ecosystem Services quietly achieve life-support work for humans which includes food, clean air, clean water, climate balance, and even mental health.
So, what is a butterfly worth? In my own mind. Priceless. Just as any living organism on this planet.
