Sustainable Solutions

Two visits have passed, and I’m happy to say, the company I am helping is really pleased with the progress we are making. Without a HSE manager for at least 4 weeks, they really needed someone to pick them up. This week, they’ve had an Environmental Permitting review with the local authorities. Specifically, the permit is seen to be of medium risk to the environment and is regulated by the local authorities.

A detailed observation of documentary evidence took place – daily checks, observations and maintenance inspections were overseen. During the walk around, it was clear that several improvements need to be reached. Although it was also noticed that a big effort to improve current systems and procedures is well in well underway. Dailly monitoring records are now being reviewed, standardised, and logged in a shared drive, ensuring that the Responsible Person has access to the records and others too.

One of the other items of criticism was on Training and Instruction. Two weeks ago, I had already undergone Spill Awareness training with two yards / maintenance guys, and we have two candidates for the One day – Environmental Awareness course being delivered on the 26th September at Tapton Innovation Centre. This made a massive difference in the way that the company wishes to advance itself. So, a priority job of next week is to start putting together a Training Matrix and attaining who needs what, when and how. The company is a casting facility that employs around 90 people, each person being highly skilled to carry out their daily role. Hats off to them, each job is demanding – they’re certainly made of good stuff.

The company has recruited for a new HSE Manager, who is looking to start the role in October, but until then, I will continue to offer support and services
